{"id":3060,"date":"2013-05-10T17:26:55","date_gmt":"2013-05-11T00:26:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.janhenderson.com\/self\/?p=3060"},"modified":"2013-06-01T11:39:16","modified_gmt":"2013-06-01T18:39:16","slug":"psychologists-ask-what-do-we-mean-by-self","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.janhenderson.com\/self\/psychologists-ask-what-do-we-mean-by-self\/","title":{"rendered":"Psychologists ask: What do we mean by \u201cself\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the introduction to their book <a href=\" http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1462503055\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=1462503055&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=janhenderson-20 \" target=\"_blank\">Handbook of Self and Identity<\/a>, psychologists Mark Leary and June Price Tangney write:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Although psychologists and sociologists often have had difficulty agreeing how to define and conceptualize their constructs, &#8220;self&#8221; has been particularly troublesome. Not only have we lacked a single, universally accepted definition of &#8220;self,&#8221; but also many definitions clearly refer to distinctly different phenomena, and some uses of the term are difficult to grasp no matter what definition one applies.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janhenderson.com\/self\/img\/self-magazine-covers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3255\" alt=\"Self magazine covers\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janhenderson.com\/self\/img\/self-magazine-covers.jpg\" width=\"444\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.janhenderson.com\/self\/img\/self-magazine-covers.jpg 444w, https:\/\/www.janhenderson.com\/self\/img\/self-magazine-covers-346x300.jpg 346w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 444px) 100vw, 444px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>They go on to distinguish five different and common uses of the word \u201cself.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> <strong>Self as the total person<\/strong><br \/>\nThis is the everyday language use of self, no different from saying herself or himself. When we say \u201cself-defeating,\u201d the self refers to the person who is defeated. Leary and Tangney advise psychologists to avoid this usage, since it is not the \u201cpsychological entity that is actually of interest to self researchers.\u201d<\/li>\n<li> <strong>Self as personality<\/strong><br \/>\nAn example of this usage is Abraham Maslow\u2019s concept of self-actualization, where what is actualized is a person\u2019s personality. Leary and Tangney suggest that when referring to \u201ca collection of abilities, temperament, goals, values, and preferences,\u201d use the word personality, not self.<!--more--><\/li>\n<li> <strong>Self as experiencing subject<\/strong><br \/>\nHas there always been an \u201cI\u201d who reflects on a \u201cme\u201d? The I who reflects is the self as experiencing subject. The me that gets reflected on is the self as known object. The experiencing self is a subjective mental presence that we commonly think of as the core of who we really are.<\/li>\n<li> <strong>Self as beliefs about oneself<\/strong><br \/>\nThis includes the thoughts, feelings, and perceptions we have about ourselves. It\u2019s only one facet of what the self can be.<\/li>\n<li> <strong>Self as executive agent<\/strong><br \/>\nThe executive function of the self includes the self-control and self-regulation we use to make decisions, plan, and act. This is also just one aspect of the self.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Addressing themselves to psychologists, Leary and Tangney recommend against using \u201cself\u201d in the first two senses. If you mean by self the total person, say person or people. If you mean by self the personality, say personality.<\/p>\n<p>The other three uses of the word are perfectly valid, but not sufficiently inclusive to capture the essence of the self. What these three have in common is the idea that the self has a capacity for and can use reflexive thought, that is, the self has the ability to be the object of it\u2019s own attention.<\/p>\n<p>Leary and Tangney conclude with this definition of the self:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[W]e think it is useful to regard the self as the psychological apparatus that allows organisms to think consciously about themselves. The self is a mental capacity that allows an animal to take itself as the object of its own attention and to think consciously about itself. \u2026<\/p>\n<p>In our experience, a clearer, more precise term than &#8220;self&#8221; can almost always be found except when referring to the cognitive mechanism that allows reflexive self-thinking to take place, for which &#8220;self&#8221; is the only designation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I\u2019ll try to keep this in mind, and it may be good advice for academic psychologists. I can\u2019t promise anything, however. I\u2019m not a psychologist, and such a narrow definition of self seems a bit too limiting for casual blogging.<\/p>\n<p>Not only that. This definition leaves out what I consider most important about understanding the self \u2013 that we are social beings.
